Police are investigating an incident in which a 22-year-old Chinese supermarket owner was held at gunpoint and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and a quantity of phone cards.
The incident occurred around 16:50hrs on Thursday.
One of the suspects, 23-year-old Oniel Batson of Durban Street, Lodge, Georgetown was shot by the supermarket’s security guard while escaping.
He is currently under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he went to seek medical attention.
The other suspect remains on the run.
According to a statement from Police Headquarters, Zheng Siyi, 22 of ‘C’ Field Sophia, was in the “Good Luck” supermarket which she operates when the suspects entered.
The suspects, who were armed with a firearm, approached the victim, held her at gunpoint and ordered that she hand over the money and phone cards that was in a draw.
Police said the victim raised an alarm and the security guard, who was on duty, responded.
Upon encountering the suspects, Police said the security guard discharged a round with his 12-guage shotgun and Batson was struck.
The suspects immediately ran out of the supermarket and discharged several rounds as they fled.
Police recovered one cartridge casing, and two .32 spent shells at the scene.
