Trump and Obama’s Friendly Interaction at Carter’s Funeral Sparks Social Media Outburst.
In a moment that caught many by surprise, former President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama were seen sharing a friendly conversation at the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter on January 9, 2025. The two were among the five living US presidents who gathered to honour Carter’s life at the Washington National Cathedral.

The interaction between Trump and Obama was noted by many, especially given their political differences. Trump himself commented on the interaction, stating that it “did look very friendly”. He admitted to seeing the footage on Fox News and remarked that it looked like “two people [who] like each other,” adding, “and we probably do”. He further elaborated on his relationship with Obama, saying “We have a little different philosophies, right? But we probably do… I don’t know, we just got along”.
Other attendees at the funeral included current President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, all of whom, according to Trump, got along well. He mentioned that they all met backstage before the service.
There were other noteworthy interactions during the service, including a light-hearted moment when George W. Bush gave Obama a friendly tap on the belly. Obama was seated between Bush and his wife, Laura Bush, while Trump was seated next to his wife, Melania Trump.
Notably, former First Lady Michelle Obama was absent from the funeral. Her spokesperson stated that she was sending “her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family”.

The funeral service was held to commemorate Jimmy Carter, who was the 39th president of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981, and the longest-living former president in U.S. history. He passed away on December 29 at the age of 100.

This display of camaraderie among former and current political leaders during a somber occasion provides a reminder of the importance of respect and civility, even among those with differing views.
