The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Monday confirmed that former government minister, Nigel Dharamlall is currently the center of an active investigation into a report of sexual assault.
In a brief press statement, Police Headquarters said that Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has confirmed that the victim, Sarah Hakh, has filed a formal report against Dharamlall at the Cove and John police station.
“He (Blanhum) noted that the allegations are serious and the matter is under active investigation,” the statement said.
This new allegation surfaces less than a year after Dharamlall was fingered in a similar offence and resigned from government.
In a statement issued last week, Dharamlall denied the allegation.
“From the outset, I wish to categorically and most vehemently deny each and every one of the allegations made by (victim name withheld),” his statement noted.
Dharamlall described the new allegations made by the woman as “rumours”, while claiming that she is geared at tarnishing his reputation.
Dharamlall was previously accused of alleging raping a 16-year-old schoolgirl in December 2022.
Following the conclusion of the probe, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) advised that he is to face no criminal charge since a case was not properly made out against him. The accuser withdrew her report to the Guyana Police Force.
Subsequently, Dharamlall resigned as the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development.
