Two men have been charged in connection with the theft of solar panels from the Two Miles Primary School in Bartica, Region Seven.

Shawn Caesar, a 26-year-old security guard from Bartica, appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed. He faces a charge of ‘Simple Larceny’ and pleaded ‘not guilty’. Caesar was granted bail of $90,000 and ordered to report to the Bartica Police Station every last Friday of the month until trial, scheduled for May 15, 2024.

Sunil Ramcharan, a 44-year-old resident of Bartica, also appeared in court before Magistrate Mohamed. He was charged with ‘Receiving Stolen Articles’, pleaded ‘not guilty’, and was granted bail of $100,000. His trial was also set for May 15, 2024.

The theft occurred between Friday, April 19, and Monday, April 22, 2024. Four Merisolar solar panels valued at GC $260,000, property of the Government of Guyana, were reported stolen.

Investigations revealed that the stolen panels were stored under the school’s stairway after repairs were made. On April 22, 2024, the school’s Canteen Manager discovered the theft and reported it to the police.

Acting on information, the police visited a Bartica businessman who provided details leading to the suspect. The suspect confessed to the theft, and two stolen panels were recovered from the businessman’s premises.

Both the suspect and the businessman were arrested and placed in custody. Investigations are ongoing into the incident.
