Fatal Shooting Occurs During Attempted Motorcycle Theft in South Sophia

Tragedy struck on Sunday night in South Sophia, Georgetown, as 22-year-old labourer Alvin Griffith lost his life in a fatal shooting during an attempted motorcycle theft.
According to a statement from Police Headquarters, the incident unfolded around 21:30 hrs at ‘A’ Field, South Sophia. Griffith was seated on his black motorcycle, identified as CM 3560, outside his residence when two assailants approached him. One of the suspects brandished a handgun, attempting to steal Griffith’s motorcycle.
A struggle ensued between Griffith and the assailants, resulting in the armed suspect firing a shot that struck Griffith in the chest. Despite attempting to flee, Griffith collapsed after running a short distance.
Local residents responded swiftly, managing to apprehend one of the suspects as they attempted to flee the scene. The captured suspect, a 19-year-old from Campbell Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, was taken into custody after being subdued by residents. However, Griffith succumbed to his injuries before medical assistance could reach him, despite efforts by residents to rush him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The apprehended suspect, who sustained injuries from the residents’ intervention, is currently hospitalized under police guard. Meanwhile, Griffith’s body remains at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
