Rickland Bovell, a 25-year-old resident of Swan Village, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by Demerara High Court Judge Jo Ann Barlow for the killing of 18-year-old David Toney and the injuring of David’s father, Mark Toney, on April 19, 2019. Bovell entered a guilty plea in November 2023, admitting to the lesser charge of manslaughter in the case.
The presiding Judge ruled during the sentencing hearing on Monday that Bovell will serve 10 years for the unlawful killing and an additional six years for the charge of wounding. The sentences will run concurrently, and the Judge directed the Prison Service to deduct the time Bovell spent in pre-trial custody from his overall sentence.
The incident occurred at Timehri Docks around 03:30 hours on April 19, 2019, when Bovell engaged in a heated dispute with David and his parents over a payment for cabbage. During the argument, Bovell pulled out a knife and stabbed both David and his father. Despite rescue efforts by public-spirited citizens, David succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
Bovell was initially arraigned for the murder of the teen in April 2019. The guilty plea to manslaughter and the additional charge of wounding were entered in November 2023, leading to the recent sentencing.
